The club

Four tables, one ritual

Forsyth Street keeps the same shape every night Harbourlio runs — here is what that shape actually is, and where it came from.

At a glance

The short version

The street outside, lamplight catching the buildings after dark

Harbourlio is four card tables and a small counter, set inside an old goods shed a short walk from the Whyalla rail yards.

Nothing here is booked through an app, paid online or played for cash — the whole operation lives at one Forsyth Street address, and always has.

The name itself is invented, chosen because it sounded right on a shed door rather than because it means anything in particular.

Then

A working goods shed by the yards

Between

Empty storage for the best part of a decade

Now

Four tables, a counter, no machines

The ritual

One evening, repeated

What makes the club what it is isn’t the building so much as the evening itself, run the same way four nights out of seven.

Doors open at half past five; the first regulars take their usual seats before the room is even half full, and the house dealer starts the first hands not long after.

By half past midnight the last chip is counted back into the tin, the lights go down, and the room waits for the ritual to start again the next night it runs.

First hand

Usually crib, just after half past five

Middle of the night

Euchre and five hundred fill the busier tables

Last hand

Whatever is still running around midnight
